About Saskatoon: In 1906, Saskatoon became officially became a city. History of Farming in Saskatoon
Saskatoon was initially settled by a colony of people with a land grant of over 300,000 acres to create a new agriculture based colony. Since its inception, the economy of Saskatoon has been heavily involved with potash, oil and farming (wheat in particular), resulting in the nickname “POW City”. Many grains, livestock, oil and gas, potash and their spin off industries fuel the local economy in Saskatoon. By 1911, the population had more than doubled and Saskatoon had become what is still today: a major distribution centre for the surrounding agricultural industry.
