Do You Think We’ll See More Farmland Inventory in 2026?

Last week I asked a question about why farmers may not be selling land right now, even though some market indicators suggest conditions could be favourable today.

The response was great, and one person asked a very fair follow-up question:

Which farmers should actually be thinking about selling?

In reality, there are many different situations where people are considering it right now.

• Some farmers are reaching retirement age and thinking about their next chapter.

• Others are selling a portion of land to clean up their balance sheet or reduce leverage.

• Some are simply selling land farther away to buy land closer to their main farm.

But there are also reasons why many farmers continue to hold their land. Two interesting ones that came up in conversations were:

• Concern about what the neighbours might think

• The emotional connection to land that has been in the family for generations

Farmland may be a business asset, but for many families it’s much more than that. So I’ll leave you with a question again this week:
