Saskatchewan Farmers Brace for U.S. Tariffs

The recent implementation of U.S. tariffs is set to have a major impact on Saskatchewan’s agricultural sector.

On March 4, 2025, President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports, alongside a 10% tariff on Canadian energy products.

In response, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced equivalent tariffs on $155 billion worth of American goods, with $30 billion taking effect immediately.

With 50% of Saskatchewan’s exports destined for the U.S., the tariffs could reduce demand for key agricultural products, leading to lower crop prices, potential production cuts, and economic uncertainty.

Canola, a major Saskatchewan export, is expected to be particularly affected, as farmers may need to lower prices to remain competitive. Other industries, including potash and manufacturing, could also face challenges due to Saskatchewan’s strong trade ties with the U.S.
